7-year-old boy killed in Newark house fire: officials

A young boy is dead after a fast-moving fire ripped through a Newark home early Thursday morning, according to local officials. The deadly blaze broke out just before 5 a.m. in a three-story townhouse on Astor Street, near the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue in the New Jersey city. Newark firefighters battling the fire discovered the body of a 7-year-old boy on the third floor, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office. Officials said the boy’s father initially escaped the home through the front door, but then attempted to get back into the house via the roof of a house next door, in an effort to save the boy. The father was removed from the roof by firefighters.
