2 NYPD officers wounded in Bronx shootout night before Thanksgiving

Two NYPD officers were recovering in the hospital on the night before the Thanksgiving holiday after being shot in the Bronx earlier in the evening responding to a 911 call by a community member, according to police officials. The shooting happened near Beaumont Avenue and 187th Street in the Bronx around 8 p.m. NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said a community member called 911 to report a man in the neighborhood with a firearm. Two uniformed officers from the department’s 48th police precinct responded to the scene and discovered the man in question sitting on the stoop of a building. Shea said one of the two officers, a male officer with eight years on the job, told the man to remove his hands from his pockets. Immediately, the man pulled out a gun and opened fire. The other officer, a female military veteran with one year on the force with the NYPD, was shot twice in the upper right arm; she returned fire about five times and struck the suspect three times, Shea said. The male officer wrestled the individual to the ground, according to Shea. He was struck once in his right armpit area; the bullet exited in the area of his left chest. Both officers were said to be in good spirits and were described as stable. The female officer was expected to be released from the hospital as early as Thursday, Shea said. The timeline for recovery for the other officer was less clear, considering the location and severity of his wound, Shea said, though he is also expected to fully recover. The suspect was taken into and released from surgery and was expected to survive. He was described by the commissioner as a career criminal. He is from the New York area. A firearm was recovered at the scene, police said. The gun was believed to be from out of state, having been reported stolen from Georgia last year. Rep. Ritchie Torres asked people to pray for the officers recovery. “We must fully support the next Mayor, @ericadamsfornyc, as he seeks to crush the epidemic of violence that has taken hold in the Bronx and elsewhere in the City,” he tweeted. Mayor Bill de Blasio, police union head Pat Lynch and other officials gathered with Shea and Torres at the hospital for the news conference and to visit with the officers.
