MANHASSET, N.Y. – New York Giants punter Steve Weatherford was honored with the World of Children Award Monday afternoon, mere weeks after he was in a car accident.

The World of Children Foundation awarded Weatherford with the prestigious distinction for serving as a role model and for all his work, locally and nationally, centered around benefiting children.

Some of Weatherford’s programs include the “Rush the Punter” and “Kick for Kids” events that fund school education programs in his home town of Terre Haute, Indiana, and his New Jersey based “Project Prom” campaign which gave Superstorm Sandy victims a chance to attend their high school proms with dignity and style, according to the World of Children’s website.

He joins the ranks of other famous philanthropists such as Lauren Bush and Dan Marino.

Two weeks earlier, Weatherford got into a scary car accident where he emerged uninjured.
