From the MLS to the World Cup, soccer is gaining some momentum and New York is getting in on the hype.
The city’s newest pro team, NYCFC, just added one of the world’s top notch talents to its roster.
He only speaks Italian so through a translator he shares with us how excited he is to be here!
The world’s biggest sport at its most basic level…and these lucky kids got a special surprise at camp today.
Professional soccer player Andrea Pirlo stopped by to help out.
A legend in Italy, now a huge part of Major League Soccer’s future.
He just recently signed with the New York City Footbol Club.
“Everything is new and this is so amazing,” Andrea Pirlo said through a translator.
The star midfielder began practicing with the team this week.
He hopes to fill a hole the developing squad really needs.
“We have a new team that started completely from scratch this year so at this point we have to turn a new leaf,” he said.
But that may take some time.
“It takes any player time to transition to any new team,” Jason Kreis, head coach, said.
And despite being 36 years old, this guy shows no signs of slowing down.
“I don’t feel that I’m old, I feel like I want to play,” Pirlo said. “Let’s leave people who want to talk about age to talk about age, I’m just going to do my job.”
Top-notch talent like David Villa, Mix Diskerud and Frank Lampard have already put the boys in blue on the map, but Pirlo can’t wait to get in on the action.
“I hope to be able to play on Sunday, but let’s see when we get to it,” Pirlo said.
“It’s a day over day process and we are not ready to make that decision today so we won’t make that decision today,” Kreis said. “By Sunday, we’re all hopeful that there will be a role for him.”
But being on a New York team means becoming a New Yorker…
“I feel really well over here,” Pirlo said.
And spending the day with young players like these is a good first step because no matter the language soccer is a sport everyone can understand.
NYCFC’s next game is this Sunday (July 26) at Yankee Stadium vs. Orlando SC.
