THE BRONX — For the first time in 2020, the Yankees will play a regular season game on their own turf.

Local sports bars like Yankee Tavern are gearing up for an influx of more customers.

“We had 30 seats before and now we’re going to have 70 seats out here,” said Yankee Tavern owner Joe Bastone. “We’re building in the street and I just got the permit. We’re going to have 4 TVs out here where everyone can stay here and watch the whole game.”

While the stands may be quiet, there will be cheers outside the ballpark. Camaraderie is why many Pinstripe fans decided to watch Friday’s game at a bar instead of home.

Millions of baseball fans are in the same boat. Attending home openers aren’t just a tradition but a sacred holiday for some. Since that’s not feasible this year, the next best thing is a flat screen in the vicinity of the stadium.

Not only is it opening night but the Yankees are taking on their great rivals, the Boston Red Sox. You couldn’t tell if you were passing by the stadium, a first for one of sports’ greatest rivalries.
