Domestic Violence Resources

Domestic and family health violence are common problems estimated to affect 10 million people in the United States every year.

It can include physical, sexual or emotional abuse, as well as sexual coercion and stalking by:

  • a current or former spouse or intimate partner of the victim
  • a person with whom the victim shares a child
  • a person who is living with or has lived with the victim as a spouse or intimate partner
  • or by any other person against an adult or youth victim who is protected from that person’s acts under the domestic or family violence laws of the jurisdiction.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, and officials have said that they’re seeing the stress and strains of the COVID-19 pandemic leading to more incidents of domestic violence.

During the peak of the pandemic in 2020, New York state saw a 33% increase in domestic violence calls coming in, according to police departments statewide.

Advocates believe there are even more unreported cases, since many victims don’t have the privacy to call for help.

PIX11’s Monica Morales was joined by Safe Horizon, a victim assistance nonprofit that has been standing with victims of violence and abuse in New York City since 1978.

In an emergency, victims of domestic violence should call 911 or contact state or local law enforcement officials. Here is more information on how to reach Safe Horizon directly.
