It was a frighting find at JFK airport’s Terminal 1 Thursday.
A Mac-11 subcompact machine pistol was found in a closet in a non-secure area around 10 a.m., according to officials.
It was unloaded at the time of discovery with no ammo in it or near the gun, according to the Port Authority. A contractor made the unsettling discovery while hanging cable inside an office. He found it in a plastic box that was covered with dust.
Thursday night, Port Authority police are trying to see if it functions. They are doing ballistics testing to see if it was used for anything illegal.
The Port Authority said only a handful of people have access to this area.
The investigation is ongoing.
