STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (PIX11) – Staten Island high schoolers still feeling the strain of Hurricane Sandy will get their dream prom this year, along with new tuxes and dresses to wear to the big event.

The Staten Island chapter of the Project Prom initiative was able to gather more than 150 new and gently-used dresses to give away. They’ve been gathering donations for weeks, but Saturday the first teenagers got a chance to come in and try on the formal wear.

Mimi Neuhaus says she and some of her employees at Nehaus Realty were inspired to start up a local chapter of the charity after they realized how tough it would be for families still struggling to rebuild after the storm to afford a prom.

In order for students to be eligible to receive clothes, they have to go online and fill out an application at

In addition to dresses the group has collected shoes, tuxedos and cameras to distribute.
