Smoky Mountains, Tenn. (PIX11) — Maybe this adventurer can join the Google Maps team.
A hiker exploring the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee last year came across the entire abandoned town of Elkmont, the Huffington Post reported.
Elkmont was an Appalachian logging town established in 1908 and sits just outside the active Elkmont campground, according to Roadtrippers. It now joins the list of abandoned towns with the likes of Cisco, Utah, Chloride, Ariz. and Bodie, Calif.

The man who came across the town’s remains, Jordan Liles, wrote on his Web site:
About a mile up an unnamed gravel road inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the back way into an abandoned neighborhood and hotel, some of which was originally constructed more than 100 years ago. In the fully edited film below, Tennessee Wonderland, I explore the houses and the remains of what was once referred to as the Wonderland Club. I’ve applied color correction, balanced audio levels, cut everything down to the essentials without sacrificing interesting moments and most importantly, I made sure to place importance on including a proper ending.
Liles recorded his discovery and made a 22-minute film that he posted to YouTube.
Though the abandoned cabins of Elkmont are reported to be quite spooky, it’s nice to know that there are still places in America yet to be discovered (or re-discovered).
