NEW YORK (PIX11) – The video of a young woman in North Carolina named Sharkeisha has become a new viral sensation on Vine, Twitter, Instagram and more.

Within 72 hours of posting the disturbing recording of the ultimate cheap shot, 22-year-old Sharkeisha Thompson has become an overnight social media star, but now some of the platforms are pushing back.  Instagram is already banning the video.

The victim later told reporters that Sharkeisha, a former friend, and a group of other classmates asked her to come over to one of their houses that day.

The extremely graphic video has been viewed almost a million times across the country and spawned countless Photoshop jobs, memes and even been entered as a verb (and a noun) in the Urban Dictionary.  “To punch the soul from another being’s body,” reads one definition.

The girl on the receiving end of the hay-maker has been identified by KHOU as Shamichael Manuel, 17.  Manuel suffered a black eye, bloodied lip and couldn’t attend school, she says, because of vision problems with her right eye.  Her pride has also taken a brutal beating, one that continues as the video is shared over and over, Manuel said.

“I was in the grocery store, and the girl was checking out my groceries. The baggers were just laughing and talking about it. I said that’s my daughter in that video, and their whole expression changed,” Manuel’s mother, Olevia Henderson told the television station.

Sharkeisha’s sucker punch has become viral online, thanks in part to social media.

Sharkeisha herself has been bragging about her brutal and criminal actions on Twitter, claiming she knocked the woman out for cheating with her boyfriend.  Sharkeisha now has around 40 thousand followers thanks to the immediacy of the Internet.

She also faces criminal charges thanks, again, to the Internet.  After law enforcement got a hold of the video evidence,  Sharkeisha was arrested and faces multiple charges including assault.

In New York City, the NYPD is also using video as evidence to find attackers in the so-called knockout game, as well as those involved in other crime.

While police admit they are seeing more video like Sharkeisha’s pop up on the Internet—anyone thinking about getting notoriety should consider the price of viral video stardom.

So far Instagram has banned Sharkeisha’s video from its site and law enforcement and community leaders are looking into ways to get more Internet companies to follow suit.
