RANCHO TEHAMA RESERVE, Calif.  — Authorities say at least five people are dead, including the gunman, and multiple children are injured after a series of shootings at multiple locations, including an elementary school, in rural Northern California.

Law enforcers have killed the shooter, according to local authorities.

One of the crime scenes is Rancho Tehama Elementary School in Rancho Tehama Reserve, about 120 miles northwest of Sacramento.

The violence began about 8 a.m. Tuesday, starting at a home and culminating at the school, authorities said, not elaborating. At least five crime scenes are being investigated.

“I know that the school’s been cleared. I know that we have children that were attending school in a safe location at this time,” Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston said.

Witnesses told TV station KRCR that they heard 90 to 100 shots fired.

“We have about 100 law enforcement personnel in Rancho Tehama right now with multiple, multiple scenes,” Johnston said.

Jeanine Quist, an administrative assistant with the Corning Union Elementary School District, says no one was killed at the school but a “number” of students were shot and wounded.

Three people were being treated at a hospital in Redding, about 50 miles north of the shootings, Mercy Medical Center spokeswoman Marcy Miracle said. She declined to provide other details about the victims or their injuries.

The Rancho Tehama area remains on lockdown, according to a statement on the school district’s website, posted by the LA Times.

“We have had an active shooter incident at Rancho Tehama Elementary this morning,” the statement said. “There are confirmed injuries. We are cooperating with law enforcement during this investigation but do not have specific details at this time.”
