MERRICK, Long Island — A school bus burst into flames Wednesday morning shortly after the driver dropped off students at a Long Island school, fire officials said.

The call came in about 7:40 a.m. about a school bus burning at Merrick and Kirkwood avenues in Merrick, according to the town’s fire department.

A fire department spokesman said no students were on the bus when the blaze began. They had been dropped off at school just before, he added. A driver was on board. No injuries were reported.

Witness photos from the scene showed a dark plume of smoke billowing from the front of the school bus, where bright red flames lapped at the yellow hood.

Firefighters were still on the scene at 8:15 a.m., fire officials said.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
