CONEY ISLAND (PIX11) – Police and FDNY rescue divers are now hoping to recover the bodies of two people who fell off of a Jet Ski in Brooklyn Thursday night.

A group of friends gathered to celebrate the 4th of July at nearby Kaiser Park and spent the day barbecuing.  A man and a woman, both from Bay Ridge, decided to take a Jet Ski out into Coney Island Creek.

Neither person was wearing a life jacket at the time of the accident, according to police sources.

A police boat searches for the two missing jet skiers Thursday as the Macy’s fireworks show continues in the background.

The woman attempted to wave to friends on the beach from the water, when she lost her balance and the Jet Ski turned over, plunging both people into the water.  NYPD rescue divers rappelled from helicopters into the water but were unable to locate the bodies.  The bottom of the creek is extremely deep in some places, with a muddy, quick sand-like floor.

The recovery operation at West 31st St. and Bayview Ave. was suspended due to darkness around 10:30 p.m. and will begin again Friday morning.
