OZONE PARK, Queens — An Ozone Park woman was sentenced to 15 years in prison for beating and starving her stepdaughter, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said Friday.

Sheetal Ranot, 35, beat her stepdaughter Maya Ranot over a two year period. Maya weighed just 58 pounds as a 12-year-old girl and was beaten so vicously she needed  lengthy hospitalization and surgery.

“The defendant was the epitome of an evil step-mother,” said Brown. “No child deserves to be treated in this manner.”

Ranot was convicted in July for first-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child. Her husband Rajesh Ranot, Maya’s biological father, is also charged with assault, unlawful imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a child. He is scheduled to be tried at a later date.

Sheetal Ranot repeatedly locked Maya inside her bedroom and refused to feed her, prosecutors said. Maya was just 10 years old when the abuse started.

Ranot also beat Maya, according to trial testimony. She kicked her in the face, bashed her in the head with a rolling pin and hit her with a broken metal broom handle.

The handle cut Maya’s left wrist and right knee, prosecutors said. Paramedics found Maya lying in a pool of blood in the family’s kitchen.

Maya held off on reporting the abuse because she was scared her step-siblings would end up in foster care, Brown said. They were finally arrested in 2014 – 18 months after the abuse started.

Rajesh Ranot is scheduled to appear on court on Sept. 12.
