Usually it’s Donald Trump making the controversial statements. This time, it’s one of his top aides in the hot seat.

“This is just the sort of attorney you would imagine, someone like that, Trump having. He was bullyish and mean and threatening.”

That’s from Brandy Zadrozny. She was a co-writer of the Daily Beast report making waves.

In that article, Michael Cohen, special counsel to Trump, said “You cannot rape your spouse. There’s very clear case law.”

The Daily Beast reporters started looking into Trump’s history after his comments about Mexican rapists coming to the United States.

Zadrozny and her co-writers found a forgotten deposition, highlighted in a Trump biography from the early 90’s. In it, Zadrozny said, ex-wife Ivana Trump called an incident between them rape. She later toned it down, saying she felt violated.

“This was a sworn deposition that Ivana Trump made as part of her divorce proceedings,” Zadrozny said. When The Daily Beast asked Cohen about it, things got very heated.

“Suddenly it took a turn for the worse,” she said. And the marital rape comments have set off a firestorm. It’s illegal in all 50 states.

Lynn Hecht Schafran specializes in sexual assault and domestic violence cases. According to her, “I think it’s a startling error for a lawyer to make in 2015. To misstate law that was changed by New York’s highest court in 1984.”

Less than 24 hours after the story went online, Cohen released a statement. He said, “In my moment of shock and anger, I made an inarticulate comment- which I do not believe– and which I apologize for entirely.”

But the marital rape comments are not the only thing Cohen said that has people upset.

According to the Daily Beast, Cohen also threatened the reporter, Tim Mak, who conducted the interview. In the recorded interview, Cohen said, among other things, “You write a story that has Mr. Trump’s name in it, with the word ‘rape,’ and I’m going to mess your life up…”

The Daily Beast reporters are still waiting for an apology for that.

A Trump campaign spokesperson has said Trump didn’t know of the original comments but he disagrees with them.
Ivana Trump issued her own statement. She said the story is without merit and she supports Donald Trump for President.
