YONKERS, NY — A police officer was shot in Yonkers on Monday night, officials said.

She and another officer were out on patrol when they responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle at Marshall Road and Ridge Drive, officials said. They approached and saw two men inside.

The men began firing on the officers as they approached and one officer was hit in the jaw, the Yonkers police commissioner said. Both officers retreated and fired back at the men in the vehicle.

One of the men was struck and both of the culprits were taken into custody, officials said.

The officer and the man who was shot were both rushed to hospitals.

The Yonkers officer is in serious but stable condition at Jacobi Hospital in the Bronx, officials said. She was conscious on her way to the hospital.

The culprit who was shot was being operated on Monday night, the police commissioner said. His condition was not immediately clear.

No identifying information is available for the officer.

A handgun was recovered at the scene.
