Police confirm sunken vessel in Sandy Hook Channel is missing fishing boat ‘El Jefe’

SANDY HOOK, New Jersey – Police confirmed Wednesday afternoon that a sunken vessel found in the Sandy Hook Channel is the fishing boat reported capsized Tuesday.

New Jersey State Police Marine Services Bureau located the apparent wreckage near buoy 14 around 9 a.m. using sonar imaging.

Emergency operators first received reports Tuesday afternoon that 40-foot fishing boat “El Jefe” was in distress.  El Jefe’s captain still has not been found.

The first call came in around 4:30 p.m., and the Coast Guard, NYPD, and several New Jersey fire departments combed the waters of the Sandy Hook Channel until nightfall.

The search for the missing captain has been suspended and will resume tomorrow, according to police.
