NEW YORK – A stranger who witnessed a New York City pharmacist being attacked for wearing a hijab decided to reach out to her in the form of an emotional letter that is restoring faith in humanity for many Facebook users.

“Last week, a customer came into the store she worked (at) and yelled at her — called her a terrorist and told her to get out of his country,” PIX11’s Narmeen Choudhury wrote on Facebook, describing the pharmacist – Sana Rashid – as a family friend.  “She defended herself as best she could trying to explain she was an American and this is her country just as much as it is his.”

He continued to rant for several minutes – verbally attacking her in front of other customers until another employee kicked him out of the Herald Square pharmacy.  She requested that the pharmacy remain unnamed out of concern for her job.

Rashid, who has worn a hijab since she was 14-years-old, said it was the most vicious attack she has ever experienced.

Days after, she says she received a letter from one of the customers who witnessed the ugly exchange.

This is what the shopper wrote:

Hi, I was at the [redacted] pharmacy on Friday evening when that man started screaming some of the most sexist, racist, hateful words I’ve ever heard.  In the moment I froze and immediately welled up with tears and sadness for you.  You were so brave for responding to him and defending yourself so eloquently.  I wanted to let you know how sorry I am that you had to experience such a traumatic event, and let you know that I’m thinking of you.  I hope you never have to experience anything like that again in your life.  This Thanksgiving season, I’m thankful for you, for the wonderful work you do, and for inspiring me to find strength during these times of unrest in our world.

Rashid may never meet the woman behind the touching letter, but wanted to reply anyway, in hopes she sees it.

“Thank you for going out of your way to make sure I got this letter,” Rashid said.  “Thank you for appreciating me.  Thank you for your kind words.  I don’t think you realize how much this simple letter means to me.  This world needs more awesome people like you.  Thank you.”
