NEW YORK (PIX11) — If you’re looking for a four-legged family member to add to your brood, this weekend is the time.

Petco’s National Adoption Weekend aims to connect pet lovers with homeless animals that need a forever home. It runs from Saturday to Sunday at Petco and Unleashed by Petco stores across the country.

The event hours change depending on the location, so visitors are urged to visit for more information about their local adoption fair.

Roxie, a 3-year-old bull dog from Mid-Atlantic Rescue, will be up for adoption at Petco’s National Adoption Weekend in New York Aug. 23-24, 2014.

All new adoptive pet parents will take home a free bag of Hill’s Science Diet dog or cat food, 5 pounds or smaller, and a free can of Hill’s Science Diet dog or cat food.

In New York, the Long Island Bulldog Rescue and Focus Adoptions are among the will have homeless pets ready for forever homes.

Can’t adopt an animal? There are other ways to support the cause.

Petco and the Petco Foundation have united for the Together We Can Fundraiser to raise money for animal welfare organizations.

And any purchase of dog or cat food or treats from Natural Balance, Canidae, Hill’s Science Diet, Solid Gold and Royal Canin between August 22 and 24 will spur a $1 donation to the Petco Foundation.
