MANHATTAN (PIX11) — At a glance, the work happening at the Hudson Rail Yard may look like any other construction site in the city. But the workers there are making history — and a brand new neighborhood.
“Never before has anyone built a neighborhood from scratch,” a project official said.
When it’s complete, the Hudson Yards will be 17 million square feet with 14 buildings sitting on more than 28 acres, he said. Fortune Magazine called it the world’s largest construction project — ever.

It’s an extremely technical process building atop an active rail yard. Thirty tracks run underneath, supporting Penn Station.
Offices, shops (including the city’s first Neiman Marcus), apartments and public space are all part of the project’s ultimate vision.
Getting there will be easy, too. The 7 line is expanding right to the Yards’ door — a $20 billion project opening this spring.
It will also be connected to the High Line — on the same level — meaning visitors can walk right into the Hudson Yard Plaza from the elevated walkway; and it will serve as Fashion Week’s new home.
And it’ll be home to the soon-to-be fourth-tallest building in NYC with an observation desk that’s “not for the faint of heart.”
The changing space is expected to be open in 2019.
