NEW YORK — This weekend’s explosions in Chelsea and the Jersey Shore prove attacks, whether organized or a product of a lone wolf, can happen any time, anywhere.

In an effort to combat terror, a new app puts the power back in the hands of both residents and tourists.

My Panda aggregates real-time, crowd sourcing information, leading users to safety in a time of crisis.

“Almost every day something happens – almost every day,” My Panda creator Cyril Assentio told PIX11 News.

Assentio developed MyPanda following a series of deadly terrorist attacks in his native France last year.

“It was like crazy and we didn’t know what to do,” he recalled. “It was very dangerous and that’s why we have to set up communication that only focuses on terrorism.”

When enabled the app produces a hyper newsfeed of everything going on around you based on your GPS location. It collects data from social media feeds, local news alerts and nearby users.

A tool for both residents and tourists not familiar with the area, it guides users to a safe location.

“With My Panda, one click [will] connect you to 911, we connect you to closest police station, we connect you to the newsfeed of New York,” he said.

According to Assentio, who is now based in California, over 100,000 people worldwide have already signed up for the app.

Its effectiveness has yet to be determined but he’s confident My Panda will be an asset for users in a time of crisis.

“To prepare the world – we have to change our mindset,” he said.

MyPanda is a free app available in both the iTunes Store and Google Play. For more information, visit their site.
