A look at the disappearing Jewish delis of New York City

NEW YORK — Back in the day there were about 1,500 Jewish delis around New York City. Today there are only about 20 surviving Jewish delis.

So why is it that a place that serves great food with awesome personality can’t survive in a city that embraces both of those things? The rent is too damn high.
