BED-STUY, Brooklyn (PIX11) — Delays, repair work and long lines aren’t the only things that interrupt your ride.
Broken MetroCard machines send riders scrambling to other entrances. In Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, the Bedford/Skillman Block Association wrote a letter to the MTA and local Assemblymember about a problem at one entrance at the Bedford-Nostrand stop.
It has one MetroCard machine while the other side has three and a booth. The association is asking the MTA to consider adding another machine to accommodate ridership.
While PIX11 News was covering this story, a crew was making rounds to check and maintain the machines. The MTA says the number of vending machines is based on swipes at the nearby turnstiles. The MTA does not have that many extras machines available.
A new fare payment system is in the development stage with a target date of 2019 for installation. The MTA says the current system, including the machines and turnstiles, is becoming outdated and expensive to maintain.
Officials will review the association’s letter.
Riders can sign up for MetroCard that automatically refills at www.easypaymetrocard.com by using their credit card. Also, employers and the government offer pre-tax programs (WageWorks, TransitWorks, TransitCheck) that deduct money from paychecks, automatically refill cards, and add tax benefits.
