YONKERS, N.Y. — Two people are in police custody after an 18-year-old woman was shot and killed in Yonkers on Thursday.
Police responded to a report of a shooting at the intersection of Lake Avenue and Morningside Avenue around 6:38 p.m.
They arrived to find Marilyn Cotto Montanez, 18, a resident of Yonkers, down on the sidewalk with an apparent gunshot wound to the head, police said.
EMS transported her to the hospital where she succumbed to her injuries, according to police.
Surveillance video secured by PIX11 shows a black Sedan drive up to the traffic light at the intersection. Two men then jump out of the car and run, with guns drawn, toward Lake Avenue Pharmacy, and they appear to fire shots near a crowded sidewalk.
Montanez was an 11th grader at Lincoln High School, the Principal’s secretary told PIX11.
The Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Edwin M. Quezada, issued a statement, extending their sympathy to the teen’s family.
“The entire Yonkers learning community and in particular Marilyn’s school family are profoundly saddened by this heartbreaking loss. Our hearts and prayers are with her family as they struggle to understand this senseless act of violence. Let Marilyn be the phoenix to summons a call to action for the adults in our community; we cannot lose another child to gun violence. Our staff will support her family as needed throughout their grieving. School staff members remember Marilyn as a caring young woman with a bright future within her reach. Our District Crisis Intervention Team will provide support to students, faculty and staff who may be grieving Marilyn’s senseless incomprehensible death.”
The school’s staff is working to have grief counselors made available for students , school officials said.
Detectives are actively interviewing witnesses, reviewing surveillance video, police said.
According to a preliminary investigation, several individuals, who knew each other, were involved in a dispute prior to the shooting, police said.
One group began chasing after the other, when one person pulled out a gun and fired at least one shot in the direction of the other group, police said.
That gunshot struck Montanez, who was an innocent bystander, Yonkers police said.
The perpetrators fled the scene.
Two people have been taken into custody.
