RONKONKOMA, Long Island — A Suffolk County police officer was arrested Monday on suspicion of hitting a motorcyclist and fleeing the scene, officials said.
Thomas O’Neill, 44, was charged with leaving the scene of an incident resulting in serious injuries, according to the Suffolk County Police Department. The officer was allegedly driving a pickup truck when he struck a motorcycle on Portion Road around 7:45 p.m. on Sunday. He then fled northbound on Avenue B.
O’Neill, a Suffolk County police officer since 2003, has been suspended without pay, officials said. He was off-duty at the time of the crash. O’Neill agreed to take a blood test to analyze for drug and alcohol and allowed officials to search his truck, police said.
The motorcyclist, Charles Giardinello, 40, was taken to a hospital on Sunday in critical condition.
