NEW YORK — Actor John Boyega gave diehard “Star Wars” fans a huge surprise when he showed up at “The Force Awakens” screenings in theaters throughout New York City on Friday’s opening night.

Boyega, who plays a stormtrooper Finn in “The Force Awakens,” popped into the Regal Cinemas Union Square, AMC Loews at West 34th Street, the AMC loews at Lincoln Square, United Artists Court Street Stadium and Williamsburg Cinemas for a short meet and greet.

The actor said “was in the area” and decided to stop by, an ultimate thank you to fans for watching the movie.

Moviegoers cheered and clapped while Boyega ran through the theater giving them high-fives— and it was all caught on camera.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” took in a record breaking $120.5 million at the U.S. box office for its opening day, CNN Money reported. The film shattered the previous record, held by “Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” which made $91.7 million on its opening day in 2011.

Disney predicts the film will bring in about $220 million by Sunday.
