NEW SPRINGVILLE, Staten Island — A 28-year-old woman was charged with murder Sunday night for allegedly leaving her newborn baby in a trash bag in front of her home on Staten Island.

Nausheen Rahman was charged with concealment of a human corpse after police discovered the newborn’s body Saturday morning.

On Sunday police announced that Rahman will also be charged with murder. The medical examiner said the baby had taken a breath and was not a stillborn.

Rahman went to Staten Island University Hospital Friday night with bleeding as a complication of giving birth. Police were alerted when hospital staff found no record of Rahman giving birth.

The body of the newborn girl was found in a garbage bag in front of her condominium the next day.

The newborn’s cause of death has not been released at this time.
