NYPD sergeant charged with DWI after allegedly crashing car into pole on Staten Island

GRYMES HILLS, Staten Island – Police said an off-duty NYPD sergeant was charged with driving while drunk after crashing his car into a pole early Sunday.

Derek Gilson, 32,  was allegedly operating a 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe when he wrecked the car around 1 a.m., according to the NYPD. He was attempting to exit the road near Long View Road when he hit a pole and then drove into a nearby lawn, police said.

Gilson was arrested and later charged with DWI and refusal to take a breathalyzer test, according to police.

Police said he was arraigned and released.
