STATEN ISLAND (PIX11) — An off-duty police officer is among those killed in an apparent wrong-way crash on Staten Island Friday morning, the officer’s department said.
Three officers and one civilian employee with the Linden Police Department were driving in a sedan that was traveling the wrong way on the West Shore Expressway and crashed head on with a tractor-trailer, according to a captain at the department.
Two people traveling in the car were pronounced dead at the scene and two others were taken to the hospital in critical condition, NYPD said.
The victims’ identities have not been released because their families have not been notified. A news conference has been scheduled at 3 p.m.
The devastating crash happened in the southbound lanes of the West Shore Expressway (Route 440) near Arthur Kill Road, police said.
The driver of a sedan was traveling against the flow of traffic when it collided head on with a tractor trailer. Footage from the scene shows a barely recognizable car mangled on the side of the road.
All lanes have been reopened after an earlier closure. An investigation is underway.
