LONG ISLAND CITY, Queens (PIX11) — The art installation called “Hands Up” is being held at the Flux Factory in Long Island City, Queens.
“The main thing that we wanted to do was kind of generate empathy for the people who are confronted in this situation on a regular basis, and what that must feel like,” said artist Roopa Vasudeva.
The installation has caught the attention of the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association.
PBA President, Pat Lynch, told PIX11 that he has not seen the installation, but that he has heard about it.
“Everyone has a right of their opinion, and New York City police officers will protect that right, but this misrepresents what goes on each and everyday,” said Lynch.
Vasudevan says this is not about any police department.
“This exhibit is not about any specific police precinct or any specific state or city or anything like that, it’s a larger conversation that we’re trying to get involved in,” said Vasudevan.”
The exhibit goes until Tuesday in Long Island City.
“It’s about the imbalance of power, and it’s about the relationship between law enforcement and civilians, and I feel like there’s been a distance created because of all these events,” said Artist Atif Ateeq.
