EAST ORANGE, N.J. (PIX11)– Two cars crashed at an East Orange intersection leaving three people dead and two others with minor injuries Wednesday night, according to police.

The incident occurred on South Grove Street and Central Avenue about 8:50 p.m. when a Toyota 4-Runner and a Nissan Maxima collided.

The three men aboard the Nissan were pronounced dead. The two women inside the Toyota were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The cars involved in the crash came to rest near an occupied NJ Transit bus, but was not involved in the crash, police say. Several passengers in the bus were treated for injuries.

East Orange mayor Lester E. Taylor released a statement Thursday morning after the deadly collision.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those involved in last night’s fatal traffic accident,” he said. “Incidents such as this are why I’ve directed the EO Police Department to expand their capacity to crack down on speeding vehicles in our city with the next phase of our quality task force, focused on public safety.”

The identities of the victims are being withheld until pending notification. No charges have been filed.
