Hundreds left in dark after power outages impact colleges, hospital in Newark

NEWARK, N.J. — Two college campuses, multiple buildings and a hospital are still without power after equipment failure and a manhole fire left hundreds in the dark Thursday.

Classes were canceled in GITC, CAB and ME buildings at New Jersey Institute of Technology campus until 1 p.m. due to the power outage, university officials said. Classes continued in the buildings that were not affected.

Aidekman, Boyden, Conklin, Life Sciences Center, Olson buildings, including the Woodward and Talbott residence halls on the Rutgers-Newark campus also lost power, the university said in a statement. Midterm and final exams scheduled Thursday were still held in buildings that were not affected.

Power in four buildings were brought back as of 12:05 p.m. after temporary repairs were made.

More than 250 customers are without power, according to PSE&> outage map.

Officials said other buildings may not be restored until 11 p.m. or midnight.

As of 12:30 p.m., 11 other buildings in the area are still in the dark, including St. Michaels hospital.

A manhole fire and equipment failure in the morning caused the power outage.
