WANAQUE, N.J. — A father was killed when he jumped off a highway bridge near the Wanaque River in New Jersey while holding his two children, according to New Jersey State Police.

It happened around 8:08 p.m. Monday night.

Troopers responded to the report of suicidal man jumping off a bridge with his two children. Authorities then located the man’s vehicle on I-287 and conducted a search of the area.

After further investigation, detectives determined the father jumped from the overpass into a wooded area near the Wanaque River.

The man, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His children were injured in the fall and transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson with non-life threatening injuries.
