NEWARK, NJ — A fight between teens escalated into a shooting that left a 9-year-old girl in the hospital in Newark on Wednesday evening, officials said.
The girl’s sister, 15, and a 16-year-old girl argued, police said. The 16-year-old girl and an unknown male entered the victim’s home, where the shooting happened.
Officers rushed to the 400 block of Holiday Court around 5:25 p.m. after the shooting was reported, Newark Public Safety Director Brian O’Hara said.
The child, who suffered injuries to her her foot and leg that were not considered life threatening, was taken to a hospital for treatment. She was alert and speaking at the time.
Police detained the 16-year-old girl, but they were still looking for the unknown male on Wednesday night.
“It is tragic that a dispute between two teenagers led to a young child being shot,” Director O’Hara said. “I am thankful that her injuries are non-life-threatening. But this incident speaks to the dilemma facing communities all over the country this summer, after children have been away from the structure of their classrooms for the past 15-months due to the pandemic. The economic and social effects of the pandemic are having an impact on violence all across our country.”
