Brighton Asylum in NJ brings a scary good time this Halloween

New Jersey

Owner Rich Gonci says they’ve been operating for 11 years.

“Before we came, our understanding is that there is a lot more of a spooky past to this attraction,” Gorci said.

Legend has it that the old warehouse was once home to a mental care facility. The unsubstantiated stories say harsh living conditions, medical experiments, and staff disappearances were a common occurrence — and now, it’s a haunted house for the public to “enjoy.”

The multi-attraction set up has three different haunted houses.

PASSAIC, N.J. — A spooky warehouse in New Jersey — which is said to have housed mental care patients decades ago — is transforming into a haunted house for another year.

For a spooky, scary, and good time this Halloween weekend, look no further than Brighton Asylum in Passaic.

Port9l (portal nine) is the first scene visitors will experience with an imitation subway ride that takes them to Brighton Asylum, but the ride doesn’t go as planned. Visitors find themselves having to walk the rest of the way through the tunnel system underground that takes them to Brighton.

Gorci said to expect actors decked out in their costumes ready to scare those passing through.

“The actors have all their different hiding spots and things of that nature — different effects and different things that happen at different times,” Gorci added.

Last but not least, the final attraction is the Bleeding Grounds, where they enter through a secret passageway. Here was said to be the staff quarters where nurses and doctors were lived on premises.

After a night of getting spooked, Gorci hopes it’s one to remember.

“It’s been so long and people have been cooped up and we want people to feel comfortable,” Gorci said. “Our wait lines are outside, they’re in the fresh air, our buildings are completely, 100% ventilated, and people can feel safe and feel comfortable coming out.”

If you’re not able to make it this weekend, Brighton Asylum is open year-round for a haunted experience during Christmas, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day and in May for a halfway-to-Halloween countdown.
