2 killed in Bayonne apartment fire: authorities

BAYONNE, N.J. — Two people were killed when a fire broke out at a New Jersey apartment building early Friday.

Authorities were called to the blaze at 3 Islandview Court in Bayonne just before 2 a.m.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire coming out of the window from an apartment on the third floor, which extended up to the attic area, according to Fire Chief Keith Weaver.

The blaze was difficult to battle because of fire entered the cockloft of the building because a roof rain that was built over the original roof.

The fire has since been deemed under control.

Three people were removed from the building, authorities said.

A man in his 70s was pronounced dead. A woman who was taken to the hospital in critical condition was later pronounced dead, according to fire officials.

Their identities have not been immediately released.

A third person refused medical attention, Chief Weaver said.

The building housed 18 units in total. Adjacent buildings also had to be evacuated, impacting 54 units, authorities said.

Emergency crews still need to determine when residents can return to their homes.

Displaced occupants are under the care of the American Red Cross and the Bayonne Office of Emergency Management.
