UNION SQUARE, Manhattan – A manhole explosion forced hundreds of homes in Union Square to lose electricity overnight Monday.

FDNY said they received a call of a fire at E. 14th Street and Fourth Avenue at about 2:40 a.m.  Monday. The fire was extinguished shortly after but more than 200 homes are experiencing outages in the area, according to Con Ed.

Con Ed’s outage map reports power should be restored by 11 a.m.
