EAST VILLAGE, Manhattan — A homeless man has been arrested in the fatal assault of his acquaintance at a Manhattan shelter.

On April 1 at 2:10 p.m., police discovered Michael Antonicelli, 69 with head trauma inside the Project Renewal Men’s Shelter at 8 E. 3rd St.

Police said Hernandez struck Antonicelli in the head with his left hand, causing him to stumble backwards and fall, striking his head on the floor, fracturing the back of his skull.

EMS took Antonicelli to Beth Israel Hospital where he died the next day.

Edwin Hernandez, 55, was arrested at the scene and charged with felony assault.

Both Antonicelli and Hernandez lived on the third-floor dorm at the shelter. Police say they were acquaintances that have known each other for an “extended period of time.”

Witnesses told police “they were arguing all morning.”
