Authorities said the fiery crash occurred around 3:45 a.m. when the car, heading southbound on the Henry Hudson Parkway, lost control as it approached the area by 96th Street on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.

“We’re mourning the loss of one of New York’s Finest today,” the mayor tweeted. We lost an NYPD Officer today after a terrible car crash early this morning. We send our deepest condolences to their family, friends and brothers and sisters in the NYPD.”

Police said the Mercedes-Benz possibly struck the highway’s median before smashing into the tree along the highway.

The car burst into flames after striking the tree and the FDNY responded to extinguish the fire, authorities said.

The two people in the car were later identified by officials as as 24-year-old Officer Kimberly Lajara and 32-year-old passenger Oscar Monegro.
