New father, his parents killed in Yaphank July 4 car crash

YAPHANK, N.Y. — Authorities have identified the three relatives killed in a July 4 car crash in Suffolk County.

Suffolk County officials identified the driver of the 2014 Nissan Altima as Chandan Gavai, 38, of Middle Island.

Gavai’s father, Kamalnayan Gavai, 74, and mother, Archana Gavai, 60, were also killed in the crash.  The parents were visiting the United States from India.

The driver’s wife, Manisha Surwade, 32, remains in critical condition at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Center.

Their 11-month-old baby also remains hospitalized at Stony Brook University Hospital.

Gavai’s car was struck around 10:45 p.m., on Yaphank-Middle Island Road when Gustave Geyer, 25, lost control of his vehicle and crashed into them. Geyer was pronounced dead at the scene.
