MONTAUK, N.Y. — A Long Island mother was taken into police custody after her 2-year-old twin daughters were found in cardiac arrest inside a car at a Montauk park and later pronounced dead.
Suffolk County police say they received a 911 call of a possible suicidal woman and her two children at an unknown location.
After an extensive, countywide search, police located Tenia Campbell’s vehicle at the Montauk County Park in Montauk Thursday afternoon.
The twin girls, Jasmine and Jaida Campbell, were found in cardiac arrest inside the vehicle.
The officers attempted life-saving efforts on the children. They were transported to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital where they were pronounced dead.
The children’s mother was taken into custody at the scene. She faces charges of two counts of second-degree murder.
Neighbors told reporters Campbell signed out her children from daycare Thursday afternoon and the toddlers’ grandmother called police, worried for everyone’s safety.
Those who knew lived near the family never suspected any trouble at the twins’ home.
Suffolk County Police are expected to discuss the details of the case at 10:15 a.m. Friday.
