LAKEVIEW, N.Y. — A bus full of high school students crashed into an overpass on the highway outside of Lakeview on Sunday night, New York State Police said.

Thirty-eight high school students and five adult chaperones were returning from a spring break trip from Eastern Europe.

The bus, owned by Journey Bus Line, picked them up from John F. Kennedy International airport and was on the way to the Walt Whitman Mall in Huntington when it crashed into the overpass, according to police.

The crash happened between exists 18 and 19 on the Southern State Parkway, officials said.  The top of the bus was sheared off in the crash. Commercial vehicles are not allowed on state parkways.

Police said the driver, Troy Gaston, is being evaluated. Gaston is from Pennsylvania and did not seem to be aware of the commercial vehicle restrictions on the highway, according to police.

Everyone on board was taken to a hospital. Police said two people were seriously injured and five others had moderate injuries. All are expected to survive.
