HARLEM, Manhattan (PIX11) — A Manhattan family was left devastated Thursday after learning that a body pulled from the Harlem River was 13-year-old Garrett Warren, one of two boys who went missing last Friday.
The NYPD sent its scuba team into the Harlem River late Thursday morning and secured a crime scene near the Madison Avenue Bridge after the body was found, according to multiple sources and video captured by AIR11.
The discovery was made near where Warren and Alfa Barrie, 11, were seen before they were reported missing, according to multiple police sources. The body was brought by the NYPD Harbor Unit to Randall’s Island and then transported to the medical examiner’s office, sources told PIX11 News.
Police later asked to speak to Warren’s family at an NYPD precinct, where they were given the tragic news.
Law enforcement sources told PIX11 News Thursday morning they felt they had found Garrett, known as “Man Man,” based on what the boy was wearing and also his size. Warren was 6 feet tall and about 200 pounds.
“A decedent has been recovered and examination to determine cause and manner of death is expected tomorrow,” said Julie Bolcer, executive director of Public Affairs for the Office of Chief Medical Examiner.
Barrie and Warren were last seen together near the 145th Street Bridge on Friday evening. A police search was conducted Friday night and again on Tuesday. The NYPD Harbor Unit scoured the area along the Harlem River, searching for the boys.
Barrie remained missing, as of Friday morning.
