BENSONHURST, Brooklyn — Police are looking for a woman accused of approaching a 3-year-old girl on a Brooklyn street and starting to walk off with the girl before the child’s mother stopped her Saturday morning.

Fairouz Alfarez, the mother, recounted to PIX11 News the moments of horror and heartbreak while she was walking on 80th Street near 16th Avenue in Bensonhurst. She was with her 3-and 6-year-old daughters around 10 a.m. when they stopped to play with a neighbor’s dog. The woman, said to be in her 30s, tried to take off with her 3-year-old daughter — not once, but three times.

“She walked with her a few steps and then I told her hold on where you going she grabbed the girl and she just run,” Alfarez told PIX11 News.

According to police, the stranger tapped the 3-year-old on the shoulder and, without a word, gently guided her to start walking away. They didn’t get far before the child’s mother yelled for the woman to stop, and she did.

Moments after the attempted abduction, the mother called 911 as the woman waited.

“She was smiling….is she sick or something,” Alfarez said.

The woman eventually took off before police arrived.

Alfarez said her daughters couldn’t sleep after the terrifying incident and are worried that the woman will return.

“My six year old keep asking me is my sisters going to go with someone. A woman tried to take my sister from me,” Alfarez said.

Neighbors in the close knit Bensonhurst community were stunned that something like this could happen.

“For this to happen in front of an adult is crazy,” neighbor Barbara Rosenwald said.

“This neighborhood is quiet something like this to happen, something wrong somewhere,” Anthony Piloi said.

The woman was last seen wearing a red and white checkered shirt with jeans.
