BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) — A Super Mario Brothers themed party made 7-year-old Jelani James’ day.

The first grader from Brooklyn has been out of school since the beginning of the year when he was diagnosed at Interfaith Medical Center with an inoperable brain tumor.

His mom, Monique James, wants life to be as normal for him as possible.

“He does know things have changed in the last 35 days.  He put on 45 pounds.  He feels different, but that’s about it. He does not know he’s sick,” James said.

”This is making his wishes come true.  All  he cares about is his Mario, and parties.”

The little boy with an adorable smile is being treated for the rare type of cancer on the brain stem at Cohen Children’s Medical Center on Long Island.

And, for having come through six weeks of radiation treatment like a champ, classmates, teachers and family members turned out for the victory celebration at Interfaith.

The medical center has set up the “Jelani We Care Fund” to help ease the financial burden for Monique James, who has worked at Interfaith for 16 years in various administrative capacities.

“He basically shows me he can do it, so I can do it.  Every day that we wake up is a blessed day because all I see is life, despite the diagnosis,” said Jelani’s mom.
