WAKEFIELD, the Bronx — At least fourteen police officers were injured while trying to rescue residents during a fire at a Bronx apartment late Tuesday.
Authorities responded to the blaze that broke out at a six-story apartment in the vicinity of Nereid and Baychester avenues around 11 p.m., fire officials said.
Video showed fire billowing from the second and third floors of the building.
Fourteen officers suffered minor injuries of smoke inhalation after they went around the building, knocking on doors to wake residents, authorities said.
Two civilians also sustained minor injuries, fire officials said.
According to police sources, a candle sparked the blaze.
