Bill to raise marriage age to 18 with no exceptions passed by New York lawmakers

Local News

(WIVB) – New York lawmakers passed a bill on Friday that makes it illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to get married.

Four years ago, New York raised the age of consent for marriage from 14 to 18 years old, but judges were still given the option to allow 17-year-olds to tie the knot.

Under this bill, judges no longer have that power.

The bill, which had bipartisan support, will go to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s desk to be signed into law.
