The Greenpoint Monitor statue is the first thing that catches your eye when you enter Msgr. McGolrick Park. But now it’s attracting attention for all the wrong reasons —  someone trashed it.

Some hooligan dumped buckets of white paint on the head of this beloved Brooklyn statue. The statue depicts a man working on the USS Monitor, the Civil War battleship.

There is a big historic connection between the neighborhood and the Monitor, as the battleship was built and stationed in Greenpoint.

And it was now just the statue that was vandalized. Benches in the park also were taken apart.

Councilman Steve Levin called said he is working to making sure the statue is cleaned and whoever did this is caught.

So far, police say they have no leads.
