The dolphin was about 300 yards off the FDR. NYPD boat crew is circling the animal, trying to provide direction. (Mario Diaz/PIX11)

A dolphin has been spotted in the East River off 96th Street.

The animal is being assisted now by an NYPD harbor patrol crew, some 300 feet off the FDR Drive.

Unlike the dolphin that died in January  in the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, which was sticking by the shoreline and was sick and bleeding, this dolphin was swimming and appeared to be in better shape.

An NYPD officer on patrol was shocked by the sight, telling PIX11: ” I just went swimming with dolphins” on vacation.
