CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn: — Since 2015, Island Pops on Nostrand Avenue in Crown Heights has been serving up flavor you could only find in the Caribbean.

While the inventory may be sweet, the story behind the ice cream shop owned by Khalid Hamid and Shelly Marshall, gives it a run for its money.

“You know, she was sick and she was craving soursop ice cream,” Hamid said. “It’s a fruity fruit that’s only found in the islands.”

It was Marshall’s favorite flavor of ice cream.

“I try to make it after we couldn’t find it, it did not come out too well and we decided there’s no one doing this here, there’s a space in the market,” Hamid said.

And Island Pops was born.

The husband and wife would eventually leave their 9 to 5 jobs to pursue the side gig full time.

Already experienced with the highs and lows of owning a small business, the COVID-19 pandemic inadvertently put a spotlight on their specialty.

“A lot of people were stuck indoors,” Marshall told PIX11. “Ice cream was just one of a number one things for people they still wanted a dessert, they wanted comfort food.”

Sticking it out for the community, Island Pops kept up with deliveries across Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and even parts of Long Island at the height of the pandemic.

The evolving menu, which has flavors on rotation depending on the season, is a stand out not only in the borough, but in the Big Apple.

They offer staples any island native would recognize.

Island Pops is located at:
680 Nostrand Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11216
